Electrical Insulating Gloves: How to Choose Class 00 to Class 4

Updated 2026-10-15 · By CHX, authorized Tilsatec distributor

Short answer: choose a glove class whose maximum use voltage is equal to or higher than the highest voltage you could contact. Class 00 is rated to 500 V AC, Class 0 to 1,000 V AC, Class 1 to 7,500 V AC, Class 2 to 17,000 V AC, Class 3 to 26,500 V AC and Class 4 to 36,000 V AC. Always wear leather protectors over them, inspect and air-test them before each day's use, and have them electrically retested every 6 months as required by OSHA 1910.137.

Your employer's electrical safety program sets the final requirement for your task. This guide covers the ratings, the OSHA care and testing rules, and what each class of Tilsatec Pulse® gloves costs at CHX today.

Gloves for EV and hybrid battery work

Electric and hybrid vehicle battery systems are DC, so compare the vehicle's maximum system voltage with the glove's DC rating. Class 00 is rated to 750 V DC and Class 0 to 1,500 V DC. If the system you work on can exceed 750 V DC, Class 00 is not enough. Check the vehicle manufacturer's service information for the maximum system voltage.

Care and testing (OSHA 1910.137)

  • Inspect for damage before each day's use, and give gloves an air test with that inspection.
  • Wear protector gloves over insulating gloves; gloves used without protectors must be retested before reuse.
  • Electrically test before first issue and every 6 months after that, and after repair or whenever insulation is suspect.
  • Gloves tested but not issued may not be put into service unless tested within the previous 12 months.

Common questions

How often do rubber insulating gloves need to be tested?

Under OSHA 29 CFR 1910.137 (Table I-5), rubber insulating gloves must be electrically tested before first issue and every 6 months thereafter, and also whenever their insulating value is suspect, after repair, and after use without protectors. Gloves that were tested but not issued may not be placed into service unless they were electrically tested within the previous 12 months.

Do I need leather protectors over insulating gloves?

Yes. OSHA 1910.137(c)(2)(vii) requires protector gloves to be worn over insulating gloves, with only limited exceptions, and gloves used without protectors may not be used again until they have been retested.

What should I check before each use?

OSHA 1910.137(c)(2)(ii) requires insulating equipment to be inspected for damage before each day's use, and insulating gloves to be given an air test along with that inspection.

What is the difference between ASTM D120 and IEC/EN 60903?

ASTM D120 is the US standard specification for rubber insulating gloves; IEC/EN 60903 is the international and European standard. Tilsatec Pulse® gloves are certified to both.

Is CHX an authorized Tilsatec distributor?

Yes. CHX is an authorized Tilsatec distributor. Pulse® gloves ship from our US warehouses in Houston, Texas and Detroit, Michigan.
